KOKOMO’S AUTOMOTIVE HERITAGE

Driven by heritage. Inspired by innovation.

From the first test drive to the future of electric vehicles, Kokomo has always led the way.

A three-mile drive that changed everything

On July 4, 1894, Elwood Haynes made history in Kokomo, Indiana, on what was then called Pumpkinvine Pike. His three-mile drive in the gasoline-powered “Pioneer” launched not only a new era of transportation but a community legacy that would span generations.

A community built by innovation

Since that momentous first drive, Kokomo has played a pivotal role in the American automotive story. From early manufacturing breakthroughs to today’s electric vehicle revolution, our community continues to make its mark.

The arrival of StarPlus Energy, a joint venture between Stellantis and Samsung SDI, marks the latest chapter — positioning Kokomo at the forefront of the EV future.

Heritage on proud display

Each summer, the Haynes Apperson Festival transforms downtown with vintage cars, parades, and family-friendly events that celebrate our legacy.

Sculptures, murals, and historical markers can be found throughout the city — from the Seiberling Mansion to Kokomo Municipal Stadium and Artist Alley, downtown’s outdoor art gallery.

Honoring the past, inspiring the future

Our community’s newest tribute to its legacy will be located right here inside the Kokomo Conference Center. The Kokomo Automotive Museum will serve as a dynamic showcase of the city’s automotive contributions, preserving stories, innovations, and cultural connections for generations to come. It’s more than a museum — it’s a bridge between Kokomo’s past and future.

Kokomo put the world on wheels and now we’re helping to drive what’s next.

Come see what drives us.
